Teaching Children to Work
7/6/2009
Developing responsibility and discipline in your child begins when they are very young. It is a long process, so the earlier that you get started in your training, the better your child can learn. If you want your children to learn self-responsibility, begin training them to do basic things independently, like brushing their teeth or feeding the dog. These are small tasks but they are the building blocks for teaching responsible behavior. For little ones, it’s not so important how well they do the job, but that they are learning to participate in family life. And to learn that in a family, everyone helps! This is also a way for parents to encourage their children to do as much as they are capable of doing. It demonstrates to your child that you know that they are competent. And it builds your child’s confidence. If you aren’t sure about what chores and activities are age-appropriate talk to your pediatrician or read a book on child development. If children are expected to help with family responsibilities that are age-appropriate they will also begin to respect other’s work and responsibilities. As you encourage your young one’s efforts, their ability to learn self-disciplined begins.
